The BIG3 is nearing the conclusion of their inaugural season with the playoffs set to be played this upcoming weekend.

In light of that, Fox Sports has officially announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have agreed to pick up the second season for the BIG3.

With the inaugural BIG3 Championship game set for Saturday, Aug. 26, FOX Sports today announces it has extended its media rights agreement with the BIG3, the professional 3-on-3 basketball league co-founded by Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz. The announcement was made today by FOX Sports Head of Business Operations David Nathanson.

“We think we have something great with the BIG3 and are thrilled to add another year to our partnership,” said Nathanson. “In its inaugural year, the league provided competitive, entertaining basketball that really resonated with fans, as evidenced by its television ratings on FS1 and packed arenas across the country.”

The BIG3 has blown past the expectations laid before it with several former NBA stars with the likes of Allen Iverson, Chauncey Billups, Rashard Lewis, Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, and Kenyon Martin all participated in some capacity in the first season. Meanwhile, former NBA greats such as Julius Erving, Clyde Drexler, George Gervin, and Gary Payton were included in coaching capacities.

This could open the door to several other former NBA stars becoming involved next season with the league being picked for another year. There have been several players such as Paul Pierce, Gilbert Arenas, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Garnett all being talked about possibly being recruited to play next season.

Ultimately, this could mark the first major step forward to the league truly taking off to greater heights.
