The Buffalo Bills came up just one win shy of a Super Bowl appearance in 2020 and through the early portions of free agency it's apparent that they will not be resting on their laurels. New England has gotten the bulk of the attention in the AFC East for the wave of moves they've made so far while Buffalo has quietly gone about their business adding key pieces in some areas and solidifying depth elsewhere. But even after these signings there is still one big need for the Bills to address before the start of the 2021 season.

Buffalo has done a great job so far. The Mitchell Trubisky signing can be mocked because he hasn't lived up to the billing of his number two overall selection a few years ago. However, getting him as a backup quarterback in Buffalo's pass effective system could be the perfect fit and the right insurance to have behind Josh Allen.

They brought in Emmanuel Sanders to bolster the air attack and add to a group that already has Stefon Diggs, Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis.

And they've also re-signed some of their own, a list that includes: Matt Milano, Daryl Williams, Jon Feliciano and Levi Wallace.

While this is all great news for the Bills, they still need help at running back.

Devin Singletary

The Bills struggled mightily to run the ball last year and the issues were not just one in nature. The offensive line was banged up much of the season so there were constant shuffling parts. But even with that, neither rookie Zack Moss nor second-year back Devin Singletary showed any real consistency. In fact, no Bills running back had a game where they rushed for over 100 yards at any point in the 2020 season. That's staggering even for a team that throws as much as Buffalo. Luckily for the Bills, there are a couple of running backs poised to go right around that 30th pick that the Bills hold in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Travis Etienne and Najee Harris are both slotted to be the first two running backs drafted in the draft. Ten years ago, both would probably go in the top 15. In today's game and with how running backs are valued in the draft, they are both projected to be fringe first rounders with the potential to slip into round two.

If the Bills want a home run hitter who can rip off some monster yardage at anytime, Etienne is your guy. While Trevor Lawrence got most of the media love in his time at Clemson, Etienne was the engine for that Tigers offense, constantly dazzling and putting up big boy numbers.

Najee Harris was a workhorse at Alabama and is in a long line of Crimson Tide running backs to make the transition from really good college running back to the NFL.

Najee Harris, Alabama Pro Day

Buffalo couldn't go wrong either way but there is something about Najee Harris' style of play that just screams Buffalo. He's physical and excels between the tackles. He was beloved at Alabama and a fan favorite. He's a bulldozer but has deceptive speed in the open field and underrated athleticism. And if that doesn't sell you on the dude, when his flight got canceled to attend Alabama's pro day (he wasn't participating), he got in a car and drove nine hours so he could be there to support his teammates.

The Bills are ready to make that next leap and catapult themselves into a Super Bowl. So far this offseason they've filled depth gaps, brought in flashy new toys for Josh Allen and brought back some of their own. The next step for Buffalo is to get a running back that can come in as an instant impact player and contribute right away.
