Over the years, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has garnered a multitude of unique comparisons to passers of today and the past in NFL history. For Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Anthony Hitchens, he sees a semblance of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in Allen.

In speaking during a press conference ahead of the upcoming AFC divisional round clash between the Chiefs and Bills, Hitchens went in-depth on this comparison.

“Maybe close to like Cam Newton,” Hitchens said. “The body type, the designed quarterback runs, can throw the ball a mile in the air, smart players, being able to read defenses and when to tuck it and things like that.

“When Cam Newton was rolling for those years, I think that’s a perfect example or identical player to that skillset. I played Cam Newton a couple of times, I’ve played Josh Allen a couple of times, they’re very similar. But at the end of the day, football is football and you got to make a team one dimensional. Stopping the run, making the quarterback just drop back. Everyone knows when it’s pass, it makes it a little easier so that’s our job to do with the front seven and eight.”

During his prime days with the Panthers, Newton was essentially the do-it-all quarterback for Carolina. In his NFL MVP-winning campaign back in 2015, Newton was called upon by Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula plenty of times to not only be a traditional passer but also to be a versatile threat on offense that could catch opposing front sevens off guard with designed runs.

To Hitchens’ point, Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has also utilized Allen in a similar way, especially as the fourth-year Buffalo quarterback has proven to be a talent who can withstand hits both inside and outside the pocket.

Allen is set to meet Hitchens and the rest of the Chiefs front seven this week, as he is aiming to lead Buffalo to a second consecutive appearance in the AFC Championship game.
