The Buffalo Bills, who came one step short of the Super Bowl last season, made no secret of their willingness to throw the ball a lot. That figures to continue in 2021. Buffalo has agreed in principle to a one-year deal with receiver Emmanuel Sanders on Tuesday, in a continued push to upgrade the passing game.

The Bills produced a terrific season in 2020. The franchise had not appeared in the AFC Championship Game in 26 years when it entered the 2020 campaign. Josh Allen took the next step in his evolution as an NFL quarterback. Stefon Diggs became the equation-changing receiver who dramatically raised Buffalo's ceiling.

The very clear realization of how much one receiver improved the team's passing game was surely in the forefront of this thought process for the Bills in grabbing Emmanuel Sanders. A proven winner with the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, and New Orleans Saints, Sanders gives Allen another reliable target.

The Bills and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll were very intentional about throwing more and running less in the playoffs. The approach translated into two playoff wins and a long-sought return to the AFC title game. The Kansas City Chiefs were better than Buffalo, but Sean McDermott's team was better than everyone else in the AFC.

The Sanders move signals the Bills' intent to take the next step with their offense and their entire roster in 2021.
