Josh Allen's greatest weapon in the NFL is his two-way ability. His cannon arm allows him to make ridiculous plays, but the sheer threat of his running is what made him such a dangerous cover. When your team was facing the Buffalo Bills, you had to effectively pick your poison against Allen.

Next year, though, it seems like the Bills are looking to lessen Allen's workload. In a recent interview, head coach Sean McDermott said that they were going to experiment with less running plays for their superstar quarterback. (via NFL.com)

“Yeah, we want to evolve… We're always trying to evolve — on the field, off the field, schematically — and in this case with Josh's running or the amount of times that we run him, we have to continue to evolve that way and making sure we're doing right by him by doing right by our team.”

At first glance, it seems ridiculous to limit your own potential by sacrificing your quarterback's greatest weapons. Allen was arguably one of the best rushers in the league last season, as the Bills star averaged 6.3 yards per carry last season. Limiting Allen's running seems like defanging a cobra and taking away a precious weapon.

However, the Bills are looking at the long-term play with this move for Allen. While it's true that Allen's combination of speed and strength is unmatched in the running game, there's one more factor at play: durability. If Buffalo wants to be competitive for a prolonged period, they need to protect their QB from taking unnecessary damage. Besides, it would be a shame to not let Allen's Howitzer cannon of an arm run rampant in their games.

The Bills will be banking on their running back core to carry the workload next season. Having J.D McKissic would've been perfect for them this year. Unfortunately, the deal fell through, and he stayed with the Commanders. It will be up to Devin Singletary and the crew again to help them protect their QB.

While McDermott is ready to do whatever it takes to keep Allen healthy, he also recognizes that the Bills star will likely do what he thinks is necessary to win games.

“So, we are going to keep a close eye on that. But the one thing we will never take from Josh is his competitive nature and spirit. So, he's gonna do it when he's gonna do it.”

The Bills are almost at the cusp of football greatness. Their overtime showdown against the Chiefs proved that they can go and trade blows with the best of them. It's just a matter of finding the right combination to make them great again.
