The Buffalo Bills were finally able to address their dire need under center with the selection of Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen with the seventh overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. As a result, the Bills now have a full-fledged quarterback competition on their hands.

Allen was seen by many as the most talented gunslinger at his position. However, general manager Brandon Beane insists that the starting job is still up for grabs at the moment, according to Matthew Fairburn of NewYorkUpstate.com:

“We’re not going to rush him, but you know if he somehow wins the job, he wins it,” Beane said. “There’s other players out there. There will be 52 other players out there and if they see that he’s clearly the best, I don’t think we could do that. We wouldn’t do that at any other position, so we’ll let it go. But he’s got a lot of catching up to do, that’s the thing.”

It makes sense that Beane would like to create as competitive of an atmosphere as he can, especially at the quarterback position. Despite all of Allen's physical gifts, he still has plenty of more growing to do before being dubbed as the potential franchise quarterback.

That said, it would still be a bit of a letdown if Allen is unable to beat out the likes of AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman, who have been nothing more than backups thus far in their careers. Buffalo managed to move up to the seventh overall spot in the draft in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to take the former Wyoming product. That said, they are hoping it is not too long before Allen establishes himself as the clear-cut starter.
