It has been over a week since veteran wide receiver Jordan Matthews was traded to the Buffalo Bills but has yet to take the field in a game for his new team due to a fracture in his sternum that he suffered in his first practice.

Despite that, Matthews firmly believes he will be able to ready in time to play in the season-opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 10, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.

“I had a [knee] injury last preseason, unfortunately, and it kind of kept me out of some time when I was with the Eagles,” he said. “But I was able to come back Week 1 and have a very productive game. I know how to take mental reps, I know how to stay in shape and I know how to make sure that I'm on top of the playbook.

“But obviously, it's a totally different scenario. I was with the Eagles for a long time. This scenario is different. I've only been with the Bills for a little while. I want to be able to go out there and prove myself to my teammates, I want them know I'm tough, and I want them to know that I'm not the type of guy that wants to miss practice and I'm just going to be there for games. I want to be there before that, but I am extremely confident that I will be able to play in Week 1.”

The injury is believed to be something that is on a week-to-week basis that shouldn't linger on. Matthews participated in individual drills during Sunday's practice that saw him catch passes while donning a helmet and shoulder pads. In fact, this was the first time that he has practiced since initially suffering his chest injury.

Matthew is expected to take up a significant role with the Bills as likely their top receiving option, especially in wake of Anquan Boldin's sudden retirement after the team's second preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles this past weekend.

If he's forced to miss any time, it could further thrust rookie Zay Jones in a larger role in the passing game in his first season in the league. For the time being, the Bills will keep a watchful eye on Matthews' recovery from the injury.
