Following the fractured collarbone injury that quarterback AJ McCarron suffered in preseason action last week, it has put the franchise in a bit of predicament under center with their competition at the position.

This has now led to head coach Sean McDermott to state that the Bills will be working rookie quarterback Josh Allen with the starters in practice this week ahead of their third preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Allen has steadily shown in the preseason that he can handle an increased workload as he continued to display flashes of promise with his play on the field. He has had his bumps in the road along the way in the preseason, but he has played with more comfort under center that saw him put together a solid brief outing against the Cleveland Browns completing 9-of-13 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown pass came on a two-yard connection with wide receiver Rod Streater as he worked his way around the pocket to throw a quick and accurate ball to Streater in the end zone.

Meanwhile, this doesn't necessarily mean that Nate Peterman is out of the running for the starting job as he has held his own preseason action as he also had a strong showing against the Browns completing 8-of-10 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. He may have a leg up in the competition given that he's in his second year in the offensive scheme that has given him more confidence and control heading into the 2018 campaign.

The Bills may be interested in adding another quarterback to the mix, but it is clear that it is a two-horse race for the starting job between Allen and Peterman that should be determined over the next couple of weeks in the preseason and training camp ahead of Week 1 action against the Baltimore Ravens.
