With the NFL offseason in full swing, each franchise is budgeting and trying to improve their rosters simultaneously. Building a Super Bowl-caliber team is beyond difficult, but to do so, each organization has to stay within the budget the NFL allowed. Looking ahead past this offseason, the Buffalo Bills are going to have to make a decision on their star quarterback, Josh Allen.

During an interview on Kyle Brandt's podcast, 10 Questions with Kyle Brandt, Allen was asked to respond to the word “franchise tag.” Allen's short answer was, “Eww.” He laughed afterward but was able to provide a longer explanation as to why he finds the franchise tag so disgusting, per Kevin Patra.

“I don't think it's great for the team, nor the player,” the QB expounded. “Again, I need to do more research on it, but if you look at the guys that've been tags in the past couple years, as far as the quarterback position goes, it was Dak, and Kirk Cousins. And at the end of the day, you could make the case that they should've just done the deal the year prior, or a couple years prior. So it is what it is. At the end of the day, whatever happens, happens. It's not gonna deter me from trying to be the best quarterback for the Bills.”

Everything the Bills quarterback claimed is valid. The franchise tag doesn't save the team any money, and although the player receives a nice paycheck, it's only for one season. Most players seek long-term contracts to solidify stability within the organization they play for.

Due to Allen's recent success, it's hard to imagine the Buffalo Bills franchise tagging their star quarterback. However, you never really know what the front office believes is the right move or not. Josh Allen is due to hit free agency in 2023.
