The Buffalo Bills have officially benched quarterback Tyrod Taylor in favor of rookie Nathan Peterman. Taylor was relieved by Peterman in the Bills’ 47-10 blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints, the Bills’ second defeat in a row.

When some context is provided, which it will be in a minute, you might find yourself scratching your head over the decision. After all, one of the gunslingers he's been as good as, if not better, is a signal-caller most teams in the National Football League would murder for.

More on that in a minute.

The benching could potentially spell the end for Taylor at Buffalo. If it is truly the end for Taylor, it’ll be a shame, especially since he has been highly productive in his three years as a starter with the Bills. His numbers even compare very favorably to the Tennessee TitansMarcus Mariota, who’s considered one of the best young quarterback talents in the league.

Despite Taylor’s strong production in those three years, the Bills for some reason just haven’t viewed him as a viable long-term answer at quarterback. Taylor admittedly isn’t the most consistent in terms of his passing, but he has proven he’s still a more than competent starting quarterback in the NFL.

Heck given the numbers provided, we can call him the rich man's Marcus Mariota.

While it’s possible Peterman could eventually turn out to be a better quarterback than Taylor, it’s still a sizable gamble for the Bills to think the fifth-rounder can match or surpass Taylor’s production, which was better than a former No. 2 overall pick in Mariota over the past three years.
