Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has decided to adopt a new strategy for his team's Week 3 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. McDermott will collaborate with defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on their defensive calls moving forward. McDermott took over the defensive play-calling responsibilities from Frazier in the second half of their 31-20 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers only recorded 65 total yards of offense after the break.

From Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News:

“I had a pretty good feel for what they were trying to do offensively, I wanted to come out and take the series and see how it went. I was able to get in a flow, and Leslie was helping me the whole time. Like I said before, whatever direction we go, we're going to work on it together. I have a lot of confidence in Leslie Frazier in terms of being a good defensive football coach,” said McDermott.

McDermott has plenty of experience running a defense. He was a defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers before landing the head coaching job for the Bills last year.

However, McDermott hasn't completely given up on Frazier. The two are still defining the specifics of their partnership, but Frazier will definitely still be in the picture.

“Leslie is going to be a big part of what we're doing,” said McDermott. “I thought we did some good things yesterday at times. Overall, and obviously in the first half, it wasn't good enough. You can't give up 28 points and expect to win, or give yourself a chance to win. So overall as a defense, I didn't think we played well enough in the first half. I thought the second half, I was very pleased with the effort, very pleased with the way the guys were flying around. They were executing and having fun out there and that was fun to watch.”

The Vikings will be a good test for their new defensive approach. If the Bills can get it together, the AFC East will be wide open this year.
