Billy Joe Saunders is getting his crack at Canelo Alvarez in the ring on May 8 in Arlington, Texas. The WBO super middleweight champion will look to stay undefeated when he enters the ring in May, touting a 30-0 mark with 14 knockouts to his resume. Recently, he has been cracking some sarcasm when discussing his opponent.
There are a barrage of quotes from Saunders that make it hard to not crack a smile at minimum in the article posted by Rob Smith on boxing247.com:
“No weaknesses at all, not one,” said Billy Joe Saunders to DAZN when asked if he sees flaws in Canelo’s game. “I’m probably one of his biggest fans. I love watching him. I've got all his memorabilia.”
This was believable at first. But the tail end of saying he has all his memorabilia, and knowing Saunders' personality, this is where the sarcasm started. And it carried on even further:
“I’m overwhelmed. I’m going to be star-struck when I see him because you can freeze. It all depends,” said Billy Joe Saunders when asked if he’ll freeze against Canelo on May 8.
If this was true, and Saunders was certain he'd be star-struck upon seeing Canelo Alvarez, he might as well pack it up and call it a night before the bell rings. But again, this is Saunders' personality shining at its highest.
Saunders did tip his cap to Alvarez, noting how accurate and precise Canelo is with his strikes.
The sarcasm is not intended to be a knock on Alvarez or a way to mock him. It leans more towards the end of Saunders feeding in to all those who do fawn and drool over Alvarez and his boxing resume, and there are probably some mind games at play.
It sets up for an even more intriguing lead-up to the fight between Billy Joe Saunders and Canelo Alvarez on May 8.
