The upcoming season will be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, in L.A. Clippers franchise history mainly due to the make-or-break nature of this campaign. Three of their starters and arguably most important players on the roster are entering a contract year.
J.J. Redick, Chris Paul, and Blake Griffin are all expected to test NBA free agency next summer, with the last two most likely to opt out of their final year. The Clippers remain as one of the powerhouse teams in the West, but with perennial contenders like the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs looking very good, the threat of seeing this core for the last time tends to get more real.
Griffin recently guested on SiriusXM NBA Radio and was asked to discuss his impending free agency. He made it clear that he is only focused on the season for now.
“Honestly, nothing I even really think about. Haven’t had a conversation with anybody. That includes friends, family, agents, coaches, teammates… It’s not a conversation I have. I got a lot of basketball left to play this year. I got a full season, postseason… So that’s on the back on my mind. I’ll deal with that one when the appropriate time comes, but right now isn’t the time.”
It may seem like a standard answer, but it can also be what's really on his mind as the Clippers have never gone beyond the conference semifinals. The 6-foot-10 power forward may feel like they have a chip on their shoulders and have a lot to prove this year.
After coming off an injury-plagued season, where he only played a total of 39 games, Griffin is now 100% healthy once again and is looking destined to play the best basketball of his career. He definitely has a lot of reasons to give it his all this year in hopes of keeping the Clippers' core together.
