One of the fan darlings from the last playoffs, the Portland Trail Blazers are looking to take forward steps in their development.

They recently inked scoring guard C.J. McCollum to a huge multi-year deal in hopes that his partnership with franchise guy Damian Lillard brings energy and wins to both team and city.

The approach towards their long term goal will be a conservative one. In Zach Lowe’s recent article for ESPN, Blazers General Manager Neil Olshey talked about their preference when it comes to building up their team.

“Good players on favorable contracts are more valuable to us than cap room. Especially in an era where all 30 teams have cap room — or the ability to get it.”

After losing out on their bids during this summer’s free agency, it’s understandable why Portland is now leaning towards friendlier contracts that could be turned into trade pieces in the future.

While some questioned their decision to pay guard Allen Crabbe that much money, the team also nabbed a decent all-around performer in Evan Turner for relatively good value. Maurice Harkless and Meyers Leonard also re-signed with the Blazers for a fair amount.

We’re talking about young players on decent multi-year contracts. One way or another, the Portland Trail Blazers have the right pieces for different directions that they may choose.
