Things happen for a reason, and C.J. McCollum decided to commemorate July Fourth by sharing his experience of not making Team USA back as a college junior.

In a touching Instagram post, C.J. McCollum recalls that everything worked out in the end because most of the players selected (with the exception of his buddy Draymond Green who he also can't resist calling fat then) are not in the NBA anymore.

Still remember the day I was cut from the team the summer before my Junior season. Besides Orlando Johnson and myself, all of players invited for the tryout came from high major schools…. Most of them aren’t in the league now. This was the summer before we beat Duke. I was pissed. Little did I know that getting cut from that team would be one of the best things to ever happen to me. Blessing in disguise mixed with Humble pie.

The 6-foot-3 shooting guard was then drafted 10th by the Portland Trail Blazers, went on to win the Most Improved Player award, and just finished his third straight 20+ point scoring season. The Lehigh Mountain Hawk is trending up and he credits experience as a humbling teacher.

Moral of the story is learn from your losses. It never happens the way you want it too but if you keep working and 🙏🏽 #Anythingispossible … just need some luck too. #MarathonMindset #SharkMentality… Happy 4th #Imeatinbutimstarving #Stillhavethestachetoo

Oh, and he also offers some clarification regarding his Draymond shout-out. Just to be sure.
