The NFL's New York Giants may have seen the passing of the torch on Sunday in the NFC East franchise's Week 3 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones started over two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning, which prompted Portland Trail Blazers star guard CJ McCollum to celebrate a savvy fantasy-football decision.

The 28-year-old McCollum, entering his seventh season in the NBA, all with the Blazers in 2019-20, tweeted on Tuesday that he picked up the first-year signal-caller Jones in his fantasy football league when Giants head coach Pat Shurmur named the Duke product the team's starter against the Bucs.

Best thing I did last week in fantasy football was pick up Daniel Jones as soon as he was announced as the starter,” McCollum shared with his Twitter followers. “[L]egendary performance bruh. Thank you.”

Jones, the Giants' sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft last April, was widely criticized at the time, with fans and pundits jumping the gun and announcing skepticism of the incoming rookie. The Giants also kept the veteran QB Manning on the roster going into the 2019 season, prompting speculation that Jones' first professional year would be a “redshirt” one.

Nevertheless, in his first career start, Jones threw 23/36 for 336 passing yards, completing two touchdowns. Jones also got the job down on his feet, rushing for 28 yards and two touchdowns including a last-minute rushing TD that capped off what would be a winning drive. Tampa Bay pushed down the field with less than a minute but missed a last-second field-goal attempt, sealing a one-point victory for Jones and the Giants.

Count McCollum as one of the Jones believers and beneficiaries of the rookie quarterback's early success.
