With a 32-26 record, the Portland Trail Blazers are in the midst of a grueling fight for playoff positioning in the Western Conference, where they currently sit at sixth place. But even as they continue to fight for playoff positioning, guard CJ McCollum took his time to recognize a young fan rooting for him and the Trail Blazers.

McCollum reacted on Twitter to the story of four-year-old Jesse, a boy who has major speech delay due to seizures. Jesse has just started to talk, and it seems as if he took a quick liking to McCollum thanks to his striking shoes on the court. After pointing out the 29-year-old’s sneakers, his mother identified the players as McCollum, after which the boy expressed his admiration for the Blazers guard.

His mother then posted a picture of young Jesse sleeping, apparently unable to stay awake and finish the Blazers’ game, before saying that she needs to get him his favorite player’s jersey.

With the tweets getting more than a thousand likes, it soon reached the attention of McCollum, who reacted to Jesse’s heartwarming story.

The LeHigh product and the Trail Blazers are coming off a narrow 106-105 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, during which he scored 14 points, nine assists, and five rebounds. But even after the defeat, seeing Jesse’s story must have been an uplifting experience for McCollum, and Jesse will certainly serve as an inspiration for him moving forward as they look to compete in the West. And with McCollum seeing the young boy’s story, he’ll likely get his very own Blazers jersey of his favorite player soon.
