The NBA has decided to suspend Portland Trail Blazers shooting guard C.J. McCollum for the season-opener for leaving the bench during a preseason game, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Here is a video of the moment:

During a game between the Blazers and the Phoenix Suns, there was a minor scuffle underneath the basket between rookie Caleb Swanigan and Suns center Alex Len.

McCollum made the poor decision to step out onto the court as it looked like he wanted to confront Len and stand up for Swanigan.

The NBA has a harsh stance against this ever since the Malice at the Palace incident back in 2004. Even in situations like this where nothing really happened and McCollum seems to harmlessly walk onto the court, the NBA has drawn a strict line.

This has come into question in the past with serious suspensions harming teams during the playoffs, namely the Suns back in 2007 in a series against the Spurs when Amare Stoudemire served a suspension for leaving the bench after Robert Horry hip-checked Steve Nash into the scorer's table. The suspension effectively ended any chances the Suns had of winning that series.

McCollum will now miss the Blazers' season-opener on Wednesday, which will ironically be a road contest against the Suns.
