Portland Trail Blazers president of basketball operations Neil Olshey said that superstar guard CJ McCollum deserves the three-year contract extension that he received from the franchise.

Olshey said that McCollum is a “critical part” of the franchise today and in the future. The Trail Blazers executive also added that signing McCollum to a longer deal is a clear proof that Portland is committed to winning and staying as one of the contenders in the stacked Western Conference.

“CJ McCollum is a franchise cornerstone and a critical part of our future,” Olshey said of McCollum in statement posted on the team's official website. “This extension represents a strong level of commitment between CJ, the Trail Blazers and the city of Portland.”

McCollum is coming off another strong season with the Trail Blazers. The 27-year-old guard averaged 21.0 points on top of 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 70 games. In the 2017-18 NBA season, he posted 21.4 points to go along with 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

McCollum's extension assured that his partnership with Damian Lillard will last at least until after the 2023-24 NBA season. Lillard signed a four-year, $196 million contract extension this summer, which will keep him in Portland in 2025.
