When the Blue Jays signed Kevin Gausman during the offseason, they weren't sure what to expect. The right-hander had a tremendous first half for the Giants in 2021 but fell off in the latter part of the season. Nonetheless, his high ceiling earned him a 5-year, $110 million dollar deal with Toronto. And it has certainly paid off so far for the Blue Jays. Kevin Gausman is currently pitching at a Cy Young type of level.

In fact, he accomplished something in his most recent start against the Astros that had not been done by anybody since Cy Young himself in 1903. Gausman has yet to allow a home run or walk a single batter in any of his five starts. That feat has not been accomplished since Young did it almost 120 years ago.

Kevin Gausman commented on his incredibly impressive start to the season.

“It’s not like I’m not trying to walk guys. I’m just throwing competitive pitches and, for the most part, getting ahead.”

Any pitching coach will always preach the importance of strike 1. Getting ahead is what they care about the most. It does not matter how filthy your breaking stuff is or how hard you may throw. If a pitcher is able to get ahead in counts on a consistent bases it automatically forces hitters to endure a defensive at-bat. Gausman's ability to get ahead in counts is likely the main reason why he has yet to surrender a long ball.
