The Toronto Blue Jays were forced to hold their breath on Saturday after ace Kevin Gausman was struck by a line drive off the bat of Wander Franco of the Tampa Bay Rays. Gausman immediately fell to the ground writhing in pain. For a team trying to catch the New York Yankees in the AL East, this was obviously the last thing the Blue Jays wanted to see. Gausman was ultimately removed from the game with a right ankle contusion.

Fortunately, Kevin Gausman's X-Rays came back negative. The team certainly feared the worst given the way Gausman fell after getting hit. But morale improved once Gausman stood up and limped off the field.

The Blue Jays' ace got off to an elite start this season. Gausman even accomplished something that had not been done since pitching legend Cy Young earlier this year. He didn't walk a single batter or allow a home run through his first five starts of the campaign. Cy Young was the last pitcher to accomplish the same feat back in 1903.

However, he has been less dominant over the past month. Nonetheless, he still owns an ERA hovering around 3 and has led the Blue Jays pitching rotation. Toronto is fortunate that Gausman did not get seriously injured on the line drive.

The Blue Jays have serious World Series aspirations in 2022. Gausman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, and the rest of the team are looking make a deep postseason run. For now, the Blue Jays will focus on Kevin Gausman's health and getting him back to 100 percent.
