The 2022 MLB season hasn't gone the way the Toronto Blue Jays expected it to go so far. They currently are in fourth place in an extremely competitive American League East division, and recently fired their manager Charlie Montoyo due to the team underperforming for much of the season.

Despite that, the Blue Jays had four players earn All-Star selections for their individual performances. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, Alek Manoah, and Alejandro Kirk were all chosen to represent the American League during the All-Star Game, which goes to show that despite Toronto's struggles, there is still a lot of talent on their roster.

The Blue Jays got some more unexpected good news earlier today when it was announced that second baseman Santiago Espinal would be joining the aforementioned Jays in Los Angeles, as he was selected as a replacement for Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve. This news delighted Blue Jays fans everywhere who have been pleasently surprised by Espinal's contributions this season.

Espinal earned his way into the starting lineup this season, and he hasn't disappointed for Toronto so far. He's hitting .271 with six home runs and 37 RBIs, while also providing positional versatility on defense with the ability to play second base, shortstop, and third base. Espinal spends most of his time at second, though, which is why he is replacing Altuve here.

Espinal has provided Toronto with an unexpected spark for much of the season, and he has finally gotten rewarded with an All-Star selection. If Toronto can get the rest of their roster going, they would be in a good spot to make up some serious ground in the American League playoff race.
