Ever since Brad Stevens took over as coach of the Boston Celtics, Gordon Hayward’s name has been linked to the team.

This isn’t surprising as Hayward played for Stevens back in college at Butler. As the talented swingman is expected to hit free agency next summer, the rumors on him potentially reuniting with his old coach are expected to pick up some steam once again.

In his recent article, ESPN’s Zach Lowe predicted that Hayward will re-sign with the Utah Jazz, but he also pointed out that league sources have confirmed with him that there is “real interest” coming from Boston.

The Jazz and Celtics are among the more promising teams in their respective conferences. Boston also has a number of assets that can be shipped as Danny Ainge pleases, while also boasting of a team-friendly cap space.

Meanwhile, Gordon Hayward is a highly important piece to Utah’s scheme of things. He is their go-to-guy and has always improved his scoring output year after year. However, the Jazz is set to face a challenge in the near future and that is playing around with their cap space in order to keep its core intact.

Rudy Gobert will become a restricted free agent next summer, and teams will definitely make a splash on one of the league’s top shot blockers. In 2018, it will be Rodney Hood and Dante Exum’s turn to become restricted free agents while Derrick Favors will become unrestricted.

It will be quite a dilemma for the Jazz front office, but a lot could still happen in the near future. Possible trades, team success, and the increasing salary cap will all become huge factors as decision time comes near.
