Renowned promoter Eddie Hearn has opened up about his stance on the future of his star fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

After closing out the year with a bang, Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez had expressed his desire to take on WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu in an attempt to make history once again.

Canelo is well aware that a win over Makabu will make him a five-weight class champion and he's looking to make it happen possibly by next year. However, his promoter Eddie Hearn views the situation differently.

According to Hearn, Alvarez can surely move up to cruiserweight but he thinks there are still a lot of big names in the light-heavyweight division that should not be written off.

“I know there’s talk of the cruiserweight fight. I just think that he [Canelo] should do exactly the same as he did at 168 at 175,” Hearn explained when discussing his desire for Alvarez to face the current light heavyweight champions in 2022 instead of Makabu via via iFL TV.

“He should fight [Dmitry] Bivol, Joe Smith and [Artur] Beterbiev, and I think he can do it all in a year AGAIN,” he added.

As things stand, Canelo claimed his one and only win as a light heavyweight when he stopped Sergey Kovalev in 2019. Since then, he went back to super middleweight and won four straight title fights against Callum Smith, Avni Yildrirm, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant.

Many believe that a move to upper weight classes will be best for Canelo at this point of his career as he had already wiped out the 168-pound division.
