When the Philadelphia Eagles begin their Super Bowl defense this September, they will be without beloved tight end Brent Celek, as the team released the veteran last Tuesday. With Celek currently unemployed, it’s high time for him to explore the free agent market. According to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio, the Detroit Lions are among the first teams to schedule a visit from Celek.

It makes sense for the Lions to find a new tight end after they released Erick Ebron on Wednesday. Ebron has been a letdown figure for the Lions since they drafted him in the first round in 2010. Detroit also let Darren Fells walk away into free agency, where the tight end found a match, signing a three-year deal with the incredibly busy Cleveland Browns.

Brent Celek, however, was not as productive in his last two seasons with the Eagles as he was in previous campaigns. He only had 14 receptions and 155 receiving yards in 2016 and followed that up with just 13 catches for 130 receiving yards in 2017. He’s durable, though, as Celek has only missed one regular-season game since getting selected in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

The Eagles’ decision to release Celek was part of their goal to go under the salary cap. In addition to that, the Eagles seem fine with Trey Burton and Zach Ertz fronting their tight end group. Burton signed a four-year deal this week with the Eagles, while Ertz signed a five-year contract with the team in 2016.
