The Milwaukee Brewers have traded pitcher Zach Davies and outfielder Trent Grisham to the San Diego Padres for second baseman Luis Urias and pitcher Eric Lauer, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network, who was first with the scoop, noted a potential reason for this move is the emergence of 27-year-old second baseman Esteban Quiroz, who virtually made Urias more expendable from the Padres' perspective.

San Diego also recently agreed to sign free-agent reliever Drew Pomeranz, (per Rosenthal) which will give them more depth in the bullpen after adding Davies in the trade.

The 23-year-old Grisham hit .243 in his first years in the majors, but showed decent power with 14 of his 36 hits going for extra bases, including six home runs. His discipline at the plate is expected to improve after striking out in 48 of his 255 at bats.

Milwaukee is getting Lauer, who was the Padres' opening-day starter in 2019, but mustered only an 8-10 record with a 4.45 ERA. The lefty is still only 23 years old and has time to develop as a pitcher, which the Brewers will hope to do upon his addition to the roster.

Urias showed some promise early on, but wound up batting a pedestrian .223 on the season through 249 plate appearances in 71 games. His glove is still developing as well, making him another project for the Brewers to tap into.

The Padres (70-92) missed the playoffs and finished as the last team in the National League West Division while the Brewers (89-73) enjoyed a short-lived stint in the postseason after NL MVP-candidate Christian Yelich was unable to finish the season dealing with a fractured kneecap.
