Although the Cubs could possibly help the Milwaukee Brewers win the National League Central by playing their best lineup for the upcoming three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Cubs manager Joe Maddon is hardly ready to prioritize winning meaningless games over the health of his own players:

Yet, the Chicago Cubs have already announced that they are shutting down starting pitchers Kyle Hendricks and Yu Darvish, and the young trio of Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez are likely done for the remainder of the regular season, as well.

The Brewers have pulled to within just a single game of the Cardinals after sweeping the Reds in Cincinnati, and the Cardinals will host the Cubs for the final three games of the season.

However, Chicago has thrown in the towel now that they have been eliminated from playoff contention. Of course, that does not mean that they cannot win a single game in St. Louis.

Milwaukee's remarkable resurgence is something to admire.

The Brewers have improved to 20-4 in September after defeating the Reds on Thursday afternoon, and they have gone 12-2 since losing superstar outfielder Christian Yelich to a broken kneecap on Sept. 1o. That run included a series victory over the Cardinals.

Meanwhile, the Redbirds have watched their grip on the Central loosen significantly after losing two of three to the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

The Cardinals pulled off a historic sweep of the Cubs at Wrigley Field last weekend, but they will likely have to win at least two of the three remaining games in order to stave off the Brewers, who will travel to Colorado to take on the Rockies.
