It has been a rough 2022 MLB season so far for Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain, who is very much aware that his playing time could be even diminished more once the team gets healthier.

Cain was pretty straightforward when he talked about the possibility of seeing his role on the Brewers take another hit, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.

“Mentally, honestly, I don’t know what to do up there right now,” Cain said on Friday. “My swing is kind of all over the place. I haven’t been able to figure things out. They already told me before [right fielder Hunter] Renfroe got hurt that my playing time was probably going to be a lot less. But Renfroe got hurt, so I’ve had to get in there probably more than they want me to right now.

“The situation is what it is right now. As long as I’m in there, I’m going to go out and compete and try to get it done. If I don’t, hey, that’s all you can do.”

Since going 3-for-4 in a Brewers 8-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals late last month, Cain has gone hitless through 17 at-bats. For the most part of the season, the Brewers have Cain batting ninth in the order. He is only hitting .175/.234/.230 this year and he's also got an embarrassing 32 OPS+. The 36-year-old Cain, who was an All-Star back in 2018, is struggling to make contact with the ball this season, which is underscored by his career-worst 23.4 strikeout rate and a .223 BABIP — also the lowest so far in his time in the major leagues.

The Brewers can afford to be patient with Cain, as they are leading the NL Central with a 33-21 record. He will have to be more consistent at the plate as soon as possible, though, given the fact that he is about to become a free agent by the end of the season.
