The Milwaukee Brewers continue to make small upgrades in order to bolster their bullpen depth, trading for San Francisco Giants left-hander Drew Pomeranz.

Pomeranz began the season as a starter for the Giants, but he struggled immensely, posting a 6.10 ERA in 17 starts. Since moving to the bullpen, however, Pomeranz has looked more comfortable (albeit in limited action). In four relief appearances, Pomeranz has allowed just one hit while striking out eight.

Milwaukee likely was willing to buy on Pomeranz the reliever, given that they have struggled to get productive outings from their bullpen outside of the likes of Josh Hader. Even Jeremy Jeffress is off to an atrocious start in the second half.

The Brewers made one of the first moves of deadline day, trading first baseman Jesus Aguilar to the Tampa Bay Rays for reliever Jake Faria. With Pomeranz joining the bullpen, the Brewers have a pair of converted starters that could have dynamic stuff in the middle innings.

One of the reasons that the Brewers were so deadly last season stems from manager Craig Counsell's willingness to deploy a number of bullpen arms. However, Brandon Woodruff moved to the rotation, and guys like Corbin Burnes and Jeffress have struggled to replicate their success this year.

Pomeranz offers another left-handed option with a very high strikeout rate, and could provide a nice compliment to Hader.

Milwaukee is limited in terms of who they can add, given that they have one of the worst farm systems in baseball. They still could use another starter, but may not have the assets.

Still, the Brewers are hoping that Pomeranz could be a difference-maker in the race for the National League Central division title.
