Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco made plenty of headlines this week after saying it was not his job to mentor rookie second-round pick Drew Lock. Luckily, first-round tight end selection Noah Fant won't be caught in the same controversy.

After re-signing Jeff Heuerman in March, the Denver Broncos traded back in the draft's first round to select Fant at pick 20. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Fant is an explosive receiver who brings 4.5 speed to the tight end position.

For a guy like Heuerman, a Broncos 2015 third-rounder, the Fant pick could be interpreted as an indictment of sorts, or at least a shot across the bow. Publicly, though, that’s not how Heuerman is viewing it.

“Noah’s a good player, and when we add good players it’s good for the team,” Heuerman said on Tuesday following Day 2 of OTAs. “Ultimately, we want to have a good team to win games. We’re working together and it’s going to be good. We’re all learning a new offense and it’s going to be exciting.”

While Flacco's stance is understandable, Heuerman plans to help Fant the same way ex-Denver tight ends Virgil Green and Owen Daniels mentored him when he entered the league in 2015.

“I was fortunate to have a few guys ahead of me to just kind of learn how to be an NFL player on and off the field and how to handle yourself,” Heuerman said. “Virgil, Owen Daniels my rookie year.”

Heuerman has battled injuries in his career, but he knows what it takes to be a successful pro. He plans to do all he can to make sure Fant, and everyone else on Denver's offense, is successful in 2019.
