The disastrous 2017 NFL season of the Denver Broncos can essentially be summed up to poor quarterback play. Despite early optimism entering the year, the lackluster trio of quarterbacks Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch, and Brock Osweiler was a burden not even the elite Broncos' defense could carry.
Not surprisingly, defensive players like linebacker Brandon Marshall are hoping vice president of football operations and general manager John Elway can do something about their current signal caller crisis. Marshall even hinted toward looking at free agency for a quarterback rather than the 2018 NFL Draft, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post:
“In my opinion, we already drafted a quarterback, first round a couple years ago (Paxton Lynch), so we’ve tried that,” Marshall said. “I think he’s going to get a free agent quarterback. I think he’s going to go spend some money and fix the position, because it’s kind of a toss-up with these rookie quarterbacks. You never know. But the only thing about getting a free agent quarterback is some guys will have to go. I hope everybody gets to stay, but that’s just the business.”
Marshall also took it a step further by suggesting Denver sign Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins.
“I mean, there’s a couple guys out there,” Marshall said. “You know. We played against a guy in Week 16 that was pretty good. There’s a couple guys out there.”
It is clear that Cousins has made an impression on Marshall after throwing for 299 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-11 win over the Broncos. Meanwhile, Osweiler finished with a paltry 193 yards and an interception.
That said, Cousins figures to be the biggest prize entering the offseason and has already expressed his desire to remain in Washington. They will likely need to pay top-dollar in order to have any hope of signing him which could result in several other players getting cut.
