The Denver Broncos made a big cut earlier today, releasing safety Darian Stewart. Stewart had been with the Broncos the past four seasons, but he isn't taking his release personal. In fact, Stewart had a lot of positive things to say about the city and organization, according to Mike Klis of Denver 9 News.

Klis spoke with Stewart, who is currently in Hong Kong, over the phone. During their conversation, Stewart said that Broncos GM John Elway called him directly to let him know the news.

“I heard it straight from his mouth that I was going to be released. All I wanted was clarity going into free agency,” Stewart said.

Stewart had been scheduled to make $4.97 million in 2019, but will now hit the open market. Stewart was one of the last few remaining members of Denver's legendary “No Fly Zone” secondary, so his release is significant.

“I’m thankful for everything Denver gave me and my family,” Stewart said. “My daughter was born in Denver, so I have so much love for Denver. Super Bowl ring, my first born child, there’s a lotta love for Denver. But it’s time for a change. I’m in a good place,” he continued.

Stewart also sounded confident in his ability to land a new contract.

“It’s a crowded safety market but I bet on myself every time. They can say I’ve lost a step, but we’ll see real soon.”

Stewart is correct that it's a crowded safety market, with plenty of big names available. His play has dropped a little bit, but he's still a serviceable player and only 30. He should be able to find a new home without much trouble, although his new deal is unlikely to pay him as much as the Broncos were going to.
