The Denver Broncos started the 2019 season at 3-8 after a loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 12. However, their fortunes were about to change.

Denver made a switch at quarterback, letting rookie Drew Lock take over for veteran Joe Flacco. Lock proceeded to go 4-1 over the final five games of the year, giving the Broncos some hope for the future.

Indeed, the Broncos have approached this offseason with the idea they can compete in 2020. John Elway made trades for cornerback A.J. Bouye and star defensive tackle Jurrell Casey, and Denver also drafted a pair of wide receivers (Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler) in the first two rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner said the plethora of offseason moves stem from Denver's feeling they can build around Lock (via Keith Cummings of Sports Illustrated):

“It’s basically saying, ‘Hey we’ve got this young QB that we like. Let’s build a team around him so he’s got the pieces to be successful. And if, for some reason it doesn’t work out with Drew, plug in another QB because you have got all these pieces,'” Warner told Edwards and Allbright.

Lock averaged just over 200 yards per contest and 6.5 yards gained per pass attempt. However, he limited mistakes and also led a pair of game-winning drives.

The Broncos made a concerted effort to give their young quarterback more weapons by drafting Jeudy and Hamler, who–along with Courtland Sutton and Noah Fant–should help open up the passing game quite a bit.

Denver has been aggressive this offseason, and Warner thinks it is because the team sees an opportunity to win now with Lock under center.
