Derek Wolfe is on the shortlist of notable names set to hit free agency for the Denver Broncos, but the team is trying to prevent him from leaving. Two weeks before free agency kicks off, Denver has begun to establish ‘positive dialogue' with Wolfe.

The week of the NFL Combine is used for teams to get a closer look at the incoming prospects for the draft. In addition, it is also a time when teams typically begin communicating with their unrestricted free agents.

While the Broncos were in Indianapolis, the front office spoke to Wolfe's agent about a possible contract. As of now, the talks are ongoing and nothing has been set in stone. However, communication in any capacity is a positive sign for both sides moving forward.

Wolfe has spent his first eight seasons in the NFL with the Broncos. Back in 2012, Denver selected him in the second round of the draft out of Cincinnati.

Over the course of his career, Wolfe has accumulated 33 sacks, 46 tackles for loss, 77 quarterback hits, and 15 deflections. Despite ending the 2019 season on injured reserve, Wolfe compiled a career-high seven sacks in 12 starts.

Besides Wolfe, the Broncos also have Justin Simmons, Connor McGovern, and Chris Harris Jr. to worry about in free agency. Albeit, Denver is expected to place their franchise tag on Simmons if a long-term deal isn't completed.

Nevertheless, the Broncos have more than enough cap space to re-sign their impending free agents. In light of that, it appears they are content keeping Wolfe in Denver for the right price.
