Although the Denver Broncos were in prime position to take one of the top-rated quarterback prospects in the 2018 NFL Draft, they decided to fortify their defense instead. The move not only provided a nice compliment to linebacker Von Miller, but it also showed the faith they have in their players under center.

Denver parted ways with almost every quarterback from the 2017 campaign except for Paxton Lynch. According to Mike Klis of Denver’s 9News, general manager John Elway is not ready to give up on Lynch just yet:

“We are not kicking him to the curb,’’ Elway said. “He can still develop. When we drafted him two years ago, as I said, we knew it was going to take some time.”

He added that Lynch will compete with last year's seventh-round pick Chad Kelly for the backup job.

“Paxton is going to compete with Chad [Kelly] for that backup spot. We are not going to bring another one in for OTAs. We will take a peek at that. It will be those two and Case [Keenum]. We are going to OTAs with those guys and go from there.”

Elway has long been enamored with Lynch's skill set ever since he was still at Memphis. Although he was viewed as a bit of a project player, his tremendous upside spurred the Broncos to take him with the 26th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Needless to say, Lynch has largely disappointed over the past couple of seasons. He has thrown for 792 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions in five appearances. That said, Lynch has had some trouble shaking his label as just a raw talent.

However, it appears Elway can still see some potential. Now that the Broncos have a dependable option in Case Keenum, they will have the luxury of taking their time to develop Lynch as their future franchise quarterback.
