There is certainly no shortage of talent in the Denver Broncos backfield. It seems they are intent on utilizing each one of their pieces.

The backfield is currently headed by Phillip Lindsay, Royce Freeman, and Devontae Booker. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, head coach Vic Fangio plans on getting running back Theo Riddick involved as well:

“Right now he’s going to get thrown in the mix,” Fangio told reporters on Sunday. “He’s had a good history in his career of being a good receiver out of the backfield and a good threat in that way. Obviously, we’ll see if we can fit him in that way. and he still has that going for him. He’s been a good receiver. I’ve seen him play the last four years in the same division and he had a couple good routes here today.”

Although the prospect of Riddick etching a meaningful role in such a deep backfield may seem a bit far-fetched, it seems Fangio is intent on getting him involved. The veteran had long established himself as one of the league's premier pass-catchers with the Detroit Lions. As a result, the Broncos may be looking to take advantage of his skill set as a receiver moving forward.

Denver uncovered a gem in Lindsay last year after the undrafted rookie earned Pro Bowl honors. However, his wrist injury spurred the Broncos to shore up some quality depth behind. Freeman and Booker's familiarity with the offense should provide them with a bit of an advantage. Regardless, it is safe to assume that either one of these backs could see their role cut significantly if Riddick continues to make a solid impression on Fangio.
