Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur confirmed that he will have specific roles for running backs Melvin Gordon and Philip Lindsay once they suit up for the team.

Gordon, who was signed from the Los Angeles Chargers just last March for a two-year, $16 million deal, is expected to take the brunt of the playing time at running back this season. However, he will certainly have some friendly competition from Lindsay, who has been with the Broncos since 2018.

“I’m all for adding good players at every position,” Shurmur said of the Broncos' RB lineup, per Jeff Heath of MSN.com. “I feel like Phillip Lindsay’s an outstanding player that we can hand the ball or throw the ball to. The fact that we have two running backs now that can be very explosive with the ball in their hands whether you throw it or run it, I think is a good thing.

“I really do think you need more than one running back. Royce Freeman obviously did a great job last year as well. We’re going to try to utilize both and all three of them and try to utilize their skills.”

Royce Freeman will likely end up as the third-string running back, but he is expected to rise to the occasion should either Melvin Gordon or Philip Lindsay go down with an injury.

It's definitely welcome news for the newly minted offensive coordinator to have more options with the Broncos. Shurmur only utilized a grand total of 11 players in 748 plays due to injuries last year while head coach of the New York Giants.
