Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock has been recovering from a right thumb sprain that forced him to be placed on injured reserve, but according to the young player, he is already ahead of where he needs to be in terms of preparing to return.

Speaking to the Denver Post regarding his injury, Lock acknowledged he was ahead of schedule in his rehab, and has already been throwing the football for a couple of weeks. Still, Lock knows that he has to take it one step at a time, and how to be the best while doing that.

“I realize that I can either get wrapped up in the negative things or get wrapped up in my work,” Lock said. “I’m getting wrapped up in my work and trying to get better every day. That means still learning even when I’m not participating, and focusing on the (positive) here for me. I have to figure out how to be the best quarterback I can possibly be without actually taking reps.”

Lock is currently eligible to begin practicing with the team on Monday, but likely won’t due to the team having a short week against the Kansas City Chiefs. As far as returning to the field, Lock isn’t able to return until Week 9 when the team takes on the Cleveland Browns on November 3. It’s currently anyone’s guess as to whether or not Lock will be reinstated, as the team still has a handful of players they can take off of injured reserve.

Even if he’s not reinstated, Lock remains committed to learning as much as he can and healing for next season.

“It’s just about getting the strength and flexibility back,” Lock said. “Those are my two main goals throughout every day, and there’s no pain when I do those (thumb) exercises, so that makes me feel good about it.”
