Last season was a rough one for the Denver Broncos. Denver failed to make the playoffs for a third straight season following their amazing run of success with Peyton Manning, and they fired head coach Vance Joseph. It was also a rough one for receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who had his season ended by a torn Achilles.

Sanders had been operating as the team's clear top receiver, so it was a huge loss. After trading away Demaryius Thomas at the deadline last year, the Broncos have a pretty young receiving corp with second-year guys like Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton needing to take big steps next season.

With Thomas gone, Sanders will be counted on to be the veteran presence among the receivers and to provide guidance.

Sanders isn't participating in the team's offseason program as he continues his rehab, but the hope remains that he'll be able to make a full return by training camp, according to Mike Klis of Denver 9 News.

Sanders tore his Achilles in Week 13 of last year, meaning training camp would be about seven and a half months after the injury. Sanders had been having a strong season before going down, catching 71 passes for 868 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games.

He showed decent chemistry with Case Keenum, but he'll now have to start over with Joe Flacco or whatever young quarterback the Broncos might draft.

Sutton flashed a lot of talent last season, but he likely isn't ready to take on a number one role quite yet.

If the Broncos want to make it back to the playoffs after their recent drought, they'll need Sanders back at full strength.
