Broncos head coach Vic Fangio owns up to mistake of not wearing mask after massive fine
Fangio made no excuses for his blunder during a press conference Wednesday. Instead, the second-year head coach stated he needs to be more vigilant about pulling the mask back up after communicating with players or officials:
“There’s no mystery of what happened or why it happened,” Fangio said, via Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. “I just have to be better with it, and continue to do a better job at pulling it back up when I have reason to pull it down.”
Fangio did state the officials also pull their masks down when addressing head coaches, and said he sometimes pulls his own down to avoid fogging up his glasses.
But the Broncos head coach still made sure to iterate it is his responsibility to make sure he is wearing the mask whenever possible:
“I’m going to have to do better with that,” Fangio said, via Williams. “What happens during the game, I’m calling the defenses, and I have to pull it down to communicate that so it can be sent into the players. When the officials come over and talk to me, they pull their masks down. I pull my down to talk to them. When I have my mask up after 8 to 10 seconds, it starts fogging my glasses. I have to pull it down. All those times where I pull it down, I have to do better at getting it back up, more than I have been. But it’s all been subconsciously happening during the game.”
Fangio is hardly alone in terms of mask-wearing issues. Aside from the five fines handed out in Week 2, the NFL issued warnings to multiple head coaches after the opening weekend.
Wearing a mask on the sideline is the new reality for the 2020 season. But it seems Fangio and other coaches around the league have more work to do in terms of showing more awareness and accountability when it comes to keeping the mask on.
