The Denver Broncos have dealt with their fair share of key injuries in the 2019 NFL season. It appears quarterback Joe Flacco can now be added to the list.

The Broncos announced that Flacco is suffering from a herniated disc in his neck. According to Benjamin Albright of KOA Colorado, he will be placed on injured reserved and quarterback Brandon Allen will step in as the starter:

“Flacco officially done for the year, Broncos place on IR.

Countdown to Lock is on. Look for him to start practicing after the bye, take over at home against Chargers after Allen handles Browns game and two game road stretch of Minn/Buff.”

Although Flacco had not played particularly well this season, his injury still deals a crushing blow to the state of the offense. As a result, Denver will now be forced to roll out Allen under center against the Cleveland Browns in Week 9. Meanwhile, quarterback Brett Rypien has been promoted from the practice squad to serve as the backup.

Flacco's injury now turns the focus to quarterback Drew Lock's looming return. The rookie has spent the year on IR after suffering a thumb injury during the preseason. Although he still has yet to return to practice, there is now plenty of speculation regarding at when fans will be able to see him in action.

Lock has an opportunity to provide the Broncos with plenty of bang for their buck after being taken in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Allen's performance this week could very well determine how patient the team decides to be with his recovery down the stretch.
