It has been a nightmare 2017 NFL season for the Denver Broncos amidst all the changes made over the offseason. First-year head coach Vance Joseph has largely underwhelmed in his season debut, as the Broncos currently sit with a 3-9 record. For those unaware, John Elway made Joseph the head coach.
Although there are a number of reasons that have attributed to their current mark, there is no doubt that the offense has been nothing short of a disaster all year long. Not surprisingly, President of Football Operations and general manager John Elway said he was ashamed of how the season played out during an appearance on Orange & Blue 760:
“We're gonna finish the season out and, you know, obviously we know the expectations of the Denver Broncos,” Elway said. “And this has been a tough year. It's not what the Broncos are about. I'm embarrassed about it, the fact that this has happened, and will do my part to hopefully get this thing turned around next year, and the expectations of Broncos fans should be for us to get this turned around.”
Elway's comments seem to indicate that he has already started to shift gears toward next season. Perhaps that could be best considering all the holes they have in their current personnel — particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
There were questions going into the season regarding Denver's quarterback situation. However, it was difficult to predict an offensive debacle like this play out for the Broncos. The quarterback carousel continued up until the firing of offensive coordinator Mike McCoy in late November. The lack of significant improvement since then could result in some more personnel changes over the offseason.
Either way, John Elway appears to have work ready for him in the offseason.
