John Elway has been trying to figure out ways to get the Denver Broncos back into Super Bowl contention over the past couple of seasons. It has been a rough go of it for the Broncos and there are changes that could be coming in the future.

According to a report from Woody Paige, shared by Pro Football Talk, Elway almost made a major change last year. He almost fired head coach Vance Joseph and hired former Broncos' head coach Mike Shanahan to replace him. Now that would be a big shakeup in Denver.

Even Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network weighed in and confirmed that he had heard the same.

Needless to say, that would have been an intriguing move for the Broncos to make. Shanahan had a lot of success during his tenure as the head coach of the Broncos. Denver wants to get back to being a contender and Shanahan has always been the kind of coach that can get a team back on track.

Denver is once again going to miss the playoffs this season after losing to the Cleveland Browns on Saturday night. Elway will have to decide which direction he wants to take the Broncos.

Firing Joseph would not be much of a surprise. If that move is made, it would not be shocking to see Elway try to sit down with Shanahan to gauge his interest in returning to the Broncos' sideline.

All of that being said, the Broncos are going to be a team to watch this offseason. Denver is a proud franchise that is not going to take missing the playoffs very well.

Joseph may be a good coach, but his time may have come and gone quicker than expected. Perhaps Shanahan will be the guy that Denver turns to.
