Denver Broncos general manager John Elway is making major changes to the front office.

Elway announced Monday that while he's staying on in his president of football operations role, he will be hiring a general manager who will have final say on roster decisions in a partnership with head coach Vic Fangio.

Here's part of Elway's statement:

“Working in this role for the last 10 years and going back to my playing days, I've always tried to do everything I can to help the Broncos win and get better,” Elway said, via the team's website. “As part of a transition I've thought about for a long time, I have made the decision to step up into an elevated role and hire a general manager to lead our personnel and football staff.

“While I'll continue to be President of Football Operations in 2021, the GM will have final say on the draft, free agency and our roster. This person will be empowered to make all football decisions, working in partnership with Vic.”

After a long playing career with the Broncos, Elway joined the franchise as an executive in 2011, subsequently taking over as the new GM.

The Hall of Famer helped build a perennial Super Bowl contender, with the Broncos capturing the Lombardi Trophy in the 2015 season thanks mostly due to a dominant defense. But success has been harder to come by in recent seasons.

Denver is 23-41 over the course of the last four years, and Elway has consistently been unable to find a franchise quarterback. Drew Lock is the latest experiment, but he struggled in his second season.

John Elway will step into a different role, and the Broncos will begin their search for a new GM to help steer the team in the right direction going forward.
