The Denver Broncos decided to deal Emmanuel Sanders to the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday. Following the move, John Elway spoke about the decision to trade Sanders to the 49ers.

The Broncos were able to acquire a third and a fourth-round pick for the veteran receiver; while they sent Sanders and a fifth-rounder to the West Coast. Elway also reiterated that the team still is focused on winning games and he wouldn't go into detail on what happened in Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans.

At 2-5 in the AFC West, Denver had no choice but to begin selling some of their veterans to other teams. The feelings were mutual for Sanders, who was ready to play for a team in contention this season. Therefore, it was the perfect time for the Broncos to part ways with him after five and a half years with the franchise.

Prior to his departure, Sanders had caught 30 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns. However, he was in the final year of his current contract and the Broncos had no intentions of keeping him beyond 2019.

With Sanders heading to the 49ers, this means that Courtland Sutton will continue to see an expanded role in the offense. The second-year wide receiver out of SMU has hauled in 36 receptions for 564 yards and three touchdowns. Of course, Sutton leads the team in all three categories.

The Broncos are now stuck in a rut where they will likely continue trading veterans for draft capital. Could Chris Harris Jr. or Derek Wolfe be the next ones to be moved for assets?

Regardless, this season definitely hasn't gone how Elway envisioned it of going.
