The Denver Broncos are counting on a coaching upgrade this season. Just because Broncos general manager John Elway clearly believes first-year coach is Vic Fangio is better equipped to lead his team forward than the departed Vance Joseph, though, doesn't mean he's comfortable publicly criticizing Denver's former coach.

“I don’t want to say anything bad about VJ. It’s always hard to compare,” he said, per 247 Sports' Zack Kelberman. “I enjoyed working with VJ for the two years we worked together. Obviously, we didn’t have the success that we needed to have, and so therefore we needed to make a change. We didn’t win like we needed to win. I’m looking forward to working with Vic.”

Elway did implicitly suggest an area in which Joseph is lacking compared to Fangio: notable proficiency on a specific side of the football. The Broncos were looking for an “expert” while conducting their coaching search, and Fangio's years as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator earned him that distinction.

“As I told you when we hired Vic, that what I was looking was an expert. Somebody that was great on one side of the ball,” Elway continued. “Vic’s proven to be great on the defensive side. I think he’s more than ready. We’ve really enjoyed working with him this offseason, and as I said, the maturity and the experience that Vic has, I think will turn into really good things.”

Fangio was hired in January. Denver went 6-10 last season, missing the playoffs for the third straight season.
