It’s been almost a decade since Mike Shanahan was fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos. The first time he went back to visit the team was earlier this year.

According to Shanahan, his first time coming back to the team was almost the previous December instead and if that would have happened, he would have been the head coach.

“I was close, I was close,” Mike Shanahan said via Pro Football Talk. “One thing that has to happen is you all have to be on the same page. One thing you’ve got to make sure of when you are a head football coach that the owner, the G.M., the quarterback are all on the same page. And if it doesn’t happen the chances of you winning the Super Bowl aren’t very good. . . . I had a great conversation with [G.M.] John [Elway] as everybody knows, it didn’t work out, sometimes it works out for the right reasons.”

In December 2018, Elway and Shanahan did a lot of talking and the two sides were very close to making him the next head coach. It’s clear by Shanahan’s comments there was something down the chain of command he didn’t agree with, making the deal fall apart. The Broncos did end up giving Joseph another year in charge before firing him and hiring Vic Fangio this offseason.

Who knows how it all would have worked out if Shannahn would have been hired, but one thing is for sure, Fangio wouldn’t be the one leading the team this season.
