The Denver Broncos will have a new quarterbacks coach in 2020. Two weeks after firing first-year QB coach T.C. McCartney, Denver has hired former New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Shula.

Mike Shula may be familiar to Broncos fans. He served as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers for five seasons, including in the 2015 season when the Broncos defeated the Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

Shula has been an NFL coach for nearly three decades and before the Giants and Panthers, coached for Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears as well as spending four seasons as the head coach at the University of Alabama.

In his previous job with New York, Shula struggled to find success as the Giants offense ranked in the bottom half of the league in terms of points per game for both 2018 and 2019. Shula was able to follow former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur who is now the Bronco's offensive coordinator.

This past season, the Broncos ranked 28th out of 32 in the NFL with 17.6 points per game and put out a bottom-five passing attack in the league behind the arms of Joe Flacco, Brandon Allen and Drew Lock.

Despite their struggles on offense last season, Mike Shula takes over a team with serious potential for the future. Denver may have found its quarterback of the future in second-round rookie Drew Lock, have one of the best young running backs in the league in Phillip Lindsay and have two stellar young targets in Courtland Sutton and Noah Fant.
