The Denver Broncos did not draft a top quarterback prospect with their No. 5 overall pick in the recently concluded NFL Draft. They instead elected to choose defensive end, Bradley Chubb. That leaves the team with just Paxton Lynch and Chad Kelly as the two QBs behind starter Case Keenum.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Legwold, Broncos GM John Elway has said that those two will remain the only two QBs backing up Keenum moving forward and that they will be in direct competition for the No. 2 spot.

John Elway just said, after the Broncos did not select a quarterback in this draft class, that the Broncos will not bring another quarterback in for OTAs and minicamp and that Paxton Lynch and Chad Kelly will compete for the No. 2 spot behind Case Keenum.

Lynch should have the inside track on making that primary backup spot behind Keenum his own. The former first-rounder hasn’t quite lived up to the lofty expectations he came with coming into the league. But he at least has some experience starting actual NFL games, even though the performances haven’t exactly been too impressive. Lynch is 1-3 in four career starts, completing 79 of 128 passes for four touchdowns and four interceptions.

In contrast, Kelly – also known as Mr. Irrelevant in last year’s draft – has yet to take an actual NFL snap. It’ll take some significant development on his part to overthrow Lynch for that No. 2 spot. But at least he’ll get his shot to compete, and if any unexpected injuries occur, he could play a larger role on the Broncos than expected.
