The Denver Broncos already boast one of the more well-known defenses in the league, but after adding Joe Flacco, the team hopes to raise its fortunes. According to former NFL player turned analyst Tony Romo, he thinks the team can perform much better than many are anticipating.

Romo recently appeared on Mad Dog Sports Radio with Adam Schein (via Broncos Wire), where he was asked about potential sleeper teams in the NFL.

“The team that sticks out to me, in the AFC, I think the Denver Broncos have a chance to really shock some people,” Romo said.

He credited the decision with the tough AFC West division and noted that the recent additions to the team could be huge for them.

“I think that Vic Fangio is as good as a defensive coordinator as — I think he’ll show how great of a head coach he is,” Romo said. “And you give him Von Miller and they went and got the one quarterback I think a lot of teams should have gotten this offseason, Joe Flacco. That right there shows me — this team has leadership on offense, they have a great defensive coordinator, a great defensive player, I think they’re going to surprise.”

Romo also made sure to mention that keeping Joe Flacco upright was key, and will be tough for opponents who have to travel to Denver. Playing the Broncos at home is always a notoriously tough task, given the high altitude that leaves many players winded after a few series. Of course, Romo hasn’t been extremely accurate with his Super Bowl predictions, but given his experience in the league, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him hit on another guess.
